Look at flightradar24 and see the aircraft highways....skyways. It is not hard to see the natural crosses happening. And the wind just keeps blowing them sideways and spreading them out if the conditions are right for them to persist.

That aircraft will have no c-trail until it gets near a cirrus cloud, on any side of that cloud, and the c-trail shows up and persists. Why? It's because there is a cut-off point when the temperature and dew point go from <5 deg C (cloud) to >6 deg C. That data is collected 2 a day for hundreds of sites around the world.
